Traditionally, Brahms's so-called late period is restricted to his chamber music and other final works from the 1890s, with some compositions from the mid-1880s signalling the beginning of his late style. In Lateness and Brahms, Margaret Notley examines the stylistic and a historical category of 'lateness' as it relates to this nineteenth century Viennese composer. She looks at Brahms's place in narratives of lateness in both music and social history, along with critics' perceptions of a late style in his lifework.
