Based on the proceedings of the 12the World Congress of the Economic Association, this volume presents a broad view of issues of general economic interest that have been faced by Latin American Economies in the late 20the century. Part I deals with macroeconomic issues, and concentrates on currency and financial crises in the region throughout the 1990s. It also includes an interesting compassion of the Asian and Latin American crises and provides a background to the problems currently faced by Argentina. Part II focuses on the behaviours of external trade and trade policies, including programmes for greater regional integration. The chapters in the third and final part consider issues relating to employment and income distribution, drawing on Latin American experience to examine the design of policies and the possibility of modelling these phenomena.
